Happy New Year

In the Chinese Zodiac, 2011 was the Year of the Rabbit. It is also referred to as the Year of the Metal Rabbit and the Golden Rabbit. In honor of this (as well as my love for the book Watership Down and the mighty Bigwig!)  here is a golden metal rabbit to say goodbye to 2011.

January 23 marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year and we will be welcoming in the Year of the Dragon. I also found it referred to as the Year of the Water Dragon and the Year of the Black Water Dragon. Well here's 2 out of 3 to welcome in the Year of the Dragon. I hope it treats us all well
Here's wishing everyone a Blessed New Year!

A day at the museum

There are few things more artistically inspiring than a visit to a great museum. We recently had a chance to go to one of my favorites, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. I get goosebumps looking at the works of some of my favorite painters of all time. Rubens for example. Regardless of what anyone says about how he painted plump ladies, he may be the greatest painter of action scenes in history.

The memories of the time my brother and I first saw the Great Hall in the Arms and Armor section are still vivid.
This is a great collection of weapons and armor from different cultures around the world. I'm sure I will be using some of these as reference in future works

And of course its always nice to catch up with some Old friends

Creature Double Feature

Here is a digital sketch and a work in progress detail from the oil painting I am working on. The great snake eels! The finished painting will be posted soon. Hint.. it might include 2 of my favorite characters in fantasy literature. One is a great big red bearded fellow and the other is a wiry, cloaked bloke who carries a scalpel and a cats claw. Any guesses?

Unsubmitted art challenge

Here's something I was working on for the "A Princess of Mars" art challenge on theArtOrder.com. I wasn't able to pull it together with holiday travel but I enjoyed revisiting some of my favorite Edgar Rice Burroughs characters. It is still a work in progress. This scene is from the beginning of chapter XXIV  when John Carter comes to the aid of Tars Tarkas after his flyer crashes in the midst of a great battle between Tharks and Warhoons on the plains of the red planet.

Thor in the Land of the Giants

Norse mythology has been a source of inspiration for me since first reading the stories of Odin and the other Gods and Goddesses. The story of Thor and his companions in the land of the giants is one of my favorites as it involves a series of events and competitions with the giants that are quite more than they appear and are full of meaning. I chose to depict this story in a setting I am familiar with, the woods of upstate NY where I grew up and adventured with my friends.
Early in the tale Thor and his companions take refuge and sleep in what appears to be a large cave with many chambers off of its main chamber. It is later revealed the cave was actually the glove of a giant who was sleeping nearby.
The giant travels with the group and that night the sleeping Thor is awakened by the giants snoring and strikes him 3 times in the head with his hammer only to have the giant stir and say he was hit by a falling leaf, then an acorn, then a twig. In reality the blows of Thor's hammer do not hit the giant but instead hit the ground and create 3 great valleys.
Upon reaching the great hall of the giants, Thor and his companions are challenged to a series of competitions. First  Loki engages a giant in an eating contest but while loki finishes the meal in front of him, his competitor finishes the meal, the bones and the plate. Loki loses his competition. In fact Loki was competing against the element Fire in the guise of a giant.
Thailfi was next to compete and he also loses. He runs a race he believes is against a giant  but is actually a race against the speed of a thought.
Thor is next and is so thirsty he chooses a drinking contest. He is given the largest drinking horn he has ever seen and is asked to drain it. He can not.  In reality the horn is connected to the oceans themselves and so can not be drained.  Thor's attempt is later revealed to have created the oceans tides.
Thor is outraged at his seeming failure and is challenged to prove his strength again by lifting one of the giants cats off the ground. Again he struggles to raise its paw of the ground. The Cat is truly the Midgard Serpent which is so vast it encircles the entire world.
Enraged by his futility Thor then challenges the giant chief to fight but the giant is seemingly so unimpressed by Thor's strength he tells him to fight his old, withered nurse instead. Thor is helpless against her and is forced to his knees..She is of course old age itself
At this point the giant chief declares that although Thor and his companions have lost, they will be granted safe passage back to Asgard. On the return they again meet the giant they had traveled with in the beginning and he reveals the truth of the contests and the fact that the giants were so impressed by the strength of Thor and his company that they were in fact afraid to test there own strength.
There are many revealing truths in this story that show an understanding of the forces of nature and time. Fire is an all consuming force if not contained.  The oceans are vast and deep and deserving of respect. The speed and power of thought should not be underestimated. No one is more powerful than the earth they walk.  No one ever escapes the clutches of aging.
I recommend this entertaining tale to anyone interested in mythology and its use of symbolism to help explain the world around us.
Next week, something short..

Sketchbook Saturday

After seeing a really good art show like Illuxcon one thing becomes perfectly clear to me. I must draw more. Everything from thumbnails to intermediate to finished drawings. More drawing!

The House of the Vampire

The vampire hunter approached the old structure at dawn as the first light of day began to break through the forest canopy. From experience, he knew this was the best time to seek out the blood sucking fiends. While some vampires can function in the light of day there powers are at there weakest and that is the only time to attempt to fight a vampire. A wooden stake through the heart or removing the head entirely are still the only ways to end the horror stalking the old woods.

This was my final painting before Illuxcon and was part of my display last weekend. Illuxcon was another great experience and having the chance to show my work there was an honor and a privilege. There are so many amazingly talented and friendly people in the fantasy art world and it was on full display at Illuxcon. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in fantasy art. Here is a picture of Kari and me with my table from the Showcase.

Movie Night

Tomorrow we are heading to Altoona, PA for Illuxcon2011! Last week I learned I would have the opportunity to have a table to display my work in the Showcase. The amazing Kari Cannistraro has put together a short video of my work and some footage of me painting. Here is a sneak preview of my Fantasy Art and Illustration Video!
Get your popcorn ready and please, turn off your cell phones and absolutely NO TALKING during the movie for the next 7 Minutes. Lights!

Valley of the Spiders

When the  second party of traveling merchants disappeared, the valley became a concern. When the fifth group vanished, a band of hardy mercenaries were hired to investigate the causes. Only one survived to warn anyone who would listen to stay away from the valley of the spiders.
Happy Halloween!

The Night Raiders

The gnolls attacked like a horde of ravenous hyenas. Once they determined the outpost was weak, they isolated it and went in for the kill.  The howls of there celebrations would be remembered and avenged when news of the slaughter reached those responsible for securing the frontiers.

Blue magic

The energy of blue magic swirled around. The spirits that reside in the rings could not wait to unleash bolts of lightning  at the enemy. Control is the most important part of any magic and discipline and focus are required when dealing with such powerful forces.

Lizardmen

If you think it's safe to wander through the desert valleys without having to pay tribute to the scaled ones you should think again. They decorate themselves with the feathers and claws of there sworn enemies that come from the sky and they hold the high passes against any intruders.

Step by step part 3

This series of posts has been about my digital painting process. Therefore I have decided to show the proverbial " Two steps forward, one step back". While working on this it became apparent that I was losing the freshness and action of the piece by getting bogged down in rendering and adding detail (referring to the bottom image of the three).  The silhouette of the figure had become stiff and lifeless. The major advantage of working digitally is the ability to save and work on any number of versions of a particular piece. At this point it is clear that it is time to go back to an earlier stage and do what can be done to save the energy of the piece and not overwork it into oblivion. The next time you see this it will be the final. I  Promise.

Step by step part 2

Here are the next few steps involving color overpainting. Transparant washes are applied much like working with watercolors. Photoshop is my main tool but at points I switch over to Painter for the  blending tools that seem to work better for me.

Step by step

I love seeing how other artists work. Process is a personal thing but it can be enlightening to see how images come together for different people. Here's a 3 part, step by step of a digital work .
When working digitally I typically begin with a black , white and grayscale underpainting or sketch.  The next steps are adding color ,working in transparant to opaque layers. When working with oils I prefer to start with color washes, then gradually blocking in lights and darks and finally adding detail. Next  week will be the initial color steps over this digital skeleton.

Surprise

The orcs bellowed and howled with laughter as they gambled for the loot from the latest raid. The cask of strong grog they carried off has made them more aggresive and less vigilant. Despite the full moon, a skilled tracker has managed to gain the high ground and the element of surprise.

Dragon Pass

A pair of young dragons have taken up residence in the high peaks and getting through the mountains has again become a problem. If the pair can be dispatched the hides alone would make anyone rich.  The brave and the foolish have left a trail and a sharp spear is now the only option.

Hurakan

The first art challenge I participated in was based on Hurakan, God of Storms on theartorder.com. I might have to revisit this after the weekend. One of these beasties is on the way.

Creature Double Feature

Another installent of cdf  experimenting with different digital brushes and techniques. There are so many interesting brushes available and sometime you want to play with a new tool from your toolbox. Even if you end up with a shack instead of a cathedral. Many of these brushes act like shortcuts to difficult drawing and painting problems but in the hands of a really good concept artist the results can be amazing.  I tend to end up back with the brushes that behave more like natural media but it's fun to experiment when having some fun with creature concepts.

City of the dead

In 1986 a group of art students visited the historic, once buried city of Pompeii, Italy. This particular small group of hard working students might have stayed at a small hotel just beyond the walls of the ancient city. They also might have taken a liquid courage fueled midnight climb and stroll into the ruins under cover of darkness and explored parts of the archeological site they would otherwise never have seen. Thankfully the only intentions were to see what they could see and no damage was done or evidence left behind. This type of behavior is not condoned here but youthful exhuberance and the desire for exploration can not always be controlled.
One of the wonders of the ruins of Pompeii is the connection to a past that is mysterious and powerful. It is easy to let the mind recreate what the place might have been like in its glory years and what strange inhabitants may have been lurking in the villas, temples, bars and brothels.  The gods were plentiful and ritual and magic were the order of the day. That all changed for the citizens of Pompeii on August 24, AD 79.

The Hall of the Goblin King

Beneath a dark mountain lies the Hall of the Goblin King. A place most adventurers fear to tread. However,  there are those who believe the secrets and treasures that lie beyond the great hall to be worth the risk to life and limb. The hall is now home to many of those that tried to pass.

The Great Wall

In order to slow the spread of the carnivorous red vine a great stone wall was constructed. Travellers wishing to pass the great wall must first find the way to the great gates. Not an easy task, especially when the vines are hungry.
